Once a student successfully fabricates this demo project, they may visit the Foundry on their own time to use our welding facilities to build projects of their own design. Month-long memberships as well as day-passes are available.

Here are the fruits of fellow iFers’ hard work on the Steampunk Trophy Clock presented to Dr. Douglas McIlroy on September 26, 2009. The Columbus Idea Foundry had been commissioned to design and build the “Good Geek Award” for the 2009 Ohio LinuxFest. Highlighted in the list below are the team members and their contributions to this amazing piece:
Alex Sutula – Woodworking, case, drawer and post assembly
Maggie Kennedy – Design, metalworking, etching and assembly
Scott Hepner – Metalworking, assembly
David Kennedy – Concept art, design, etched illustrations
Alex Bandar – cheerleader, organizer, and a general pimp daddy (the last bit is a direct quote from David K
)
Congrats you guys and congrats to the “Good Geek” recipient Dr. McIlroy! Words simply cannot do justice to this clock, so please check out the pics at the end of the post. Alex likened the experience of the trophy presentation to one of the most iconic award presentation scenes in geekdom. Wish we all could have witnessed it – I can almost hear the John Williams music now.
In addition to the Steampunk Trophy Clock, Alex Bandar gave a presentation at OLF about community workshops, and how a project – like the Steampunk Trophy Clock – could be enhanced by adopting/implementing “open source values” in DIY’s. The talk was a big hit, and the iF made may good connections to similar community groups in the area. Congrats to Alex!

Just wanted to let everyone know that we have gotten our first wave of spammers on the forum page. Several illicit materials were posted from “supporters” of the foundry in the Ukraine. The good news is that Mandy wiped their privileges and their posts, so we can get back down to foundry fun.
We are sorry for the lax security. We have been trying to find the balance between the ease of registration and keeping the spammers at bay… in the meantime we have added an extra layer of defense to combat the would-be spammers, but if for some reason they get through and we miss it, please let us know. Thanks!
On September 22, 2009, Alex Bandar and Adlai Stein descended upon Upper Arlington High School to give a materials science lecture and a forging demo. As you can see from the pics below, it was a beautiful day to beat on some metal. Much thanks to the Golden Bears and their instructors for hosting the iF!
Hey there CupCake!
On December 16, 2009, the iF was lucky enough to host the kick-off for individuals interested in the MakerBot Industries 3D printer, dubbed the “CupCake CNC”. The iF workshop had 3 of these adorable little guys to drool over and play with! Pics of the event are included below.
This meeting is going to become a monthly get together for CupCake enthusiatists to share their creations and ideas. The January meeting took place on January 13 and the February meeting date is in the works, so please keep an eye out for future meeting postings!
The iF wants to thank the owners of the CupCakes for coming in and sharing this awesome device. Also, thanks for everyone for coming out and participating in the get-together.
